The Explorers Flight was launched on August
2, 2008 from Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
Launch services were provided by Space Exploration
Technologies, Inc. (SpaceX)
aboard a Falcon
1 rocket. However, an anomaly occurred during
ascent and the spacecraft did not attain Earth orbit.

Note that the following month SpaceX made history
when it launched another Falcon 1, which did reach
orbit. In fact, it was the first privately-developed
liquid fuel rocket to orbit the Earth. Click here
