The Explorers Flight was launched on August 2, 2008 from Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Launch services were provided by Space Exploration Technologies, Inc. (SpaceX) aboard a Falcon 1 rocket. However, an anomaly occurred during ascent and the spacecraft did not attain Earth orbit.

Note that the following month SpaceX made history when it launched another Falcon 1, which did reach orbit. In fact, it was the first privately-developed liquid fuel rocket to orbit the Earth. Click here to read about this exciting mission.
